Texas window tint laws, explained plainly.

A practical overview for drivers choosing automotive tint in Texas. This page is general information—not legal advice—and the rules can change. Always check the linked Texas Department of Public Safety source before making a final shade decision.

01

Windows beside the driver

The front sides have a measurable limit.

Texas DPS says the windows immediately to the right and left of the driver must allow at least 25% light transmission when the film and original glass are measured together. DPS also lists a luminous-reflectance limit of 25% or less for those windows.

That combined measurement matters because the factory glass already affects the result. Choosing a roll labeled with a percentage does not by itself guarantee the installed glass-and-film combination will measure exactly the same.

  • Driver-side front window: 25% or more light transmission
  • Passenger-side front window: 25% or more light transmission
  • Measured together with the original glass
  • Luminous reflectance: 25% or less

Windshield

Keep brow film above the legal line.

DPS allows sunscreening material above the windshield's AS-1 line. If the windshield has no AS-1 line, the material must end no lower than five inches from the top. The brow may not be red, amber, or blue.

In the regulated brow area, the film and glass together must meet the 25% light-transmission minimum and 25% reflectance maximum. DPS also states that clear, untinted UV film is allowed anywhere on the front windshield without requiring a medical exemption.

  • Above the AS-1 line
  • Or no more than five inches from the top when there is no AS-1 line
  • No red, amber, or blue brow film
  • Clear untinted UV film is treated separately by DPS

Behind the driver

Rear rules depend on the window and mirrors.

DPS describes side windows behind the driver as exempt from the state sunscreening limits. The rear window has a separate rule tied to outside mirrors.

When a vehicle has an outside mirror on each side that gives the driver the required rear roadway view, DPS lists no sunscreening restriction for the rear window. Without qualifying mirrors on both sides, the rear window must meet the 25% light-transmission minimum and 25% reflectance maximum.

  • Rear side windows are treated differently from front sides
  • Rear-window treatment depends on outside mirrors
  • Mirror equipment should be confirmed before choosing rear glass film
  • Vehicle-specific details still matter

Exceptions and labels

Keep the right documentation with the vehicle.

DPS lists exemptions for certain law-enforcement vehicles, medical needs, and passenger-transport vehicles. For a medical exception involving front windows darker than the usual requirement, DPS directs motorists to carry a signed statement from a licensed physician or licensed optometrist that identifies the driver or occupant and explains the medical need.

DPS also describes a required compliance label placed in the rearmost bottom corner of the driver's-side window. The official DPS page contains the current details and links into the controlling Texas rules.

  • Medical documentation stays with the vehicle
  • DPS no longer issues the older tint exemption certificates
  • One compliance label is required per vehicle
  • Official requirements should be checked again before installation
